The team is on the team. "Team" being a singular noun, thus, breaking it into constituent parts defeats the actual idea of "team" seeing as it's an all inclusive term for everyone on the team.

Got 4 ideas:

1) Our team is a group of people and this can be also called a "clique" which contains 'i' and 'u' (and also c, l, q and e).

2) team contains 'me' and [ 'em ] which is a short for 'them' in parts of England, so team has me and them in it.

3) there is no u and i since separately we are not a team

4) there are other members in the team besides u and i
